Who is Leonard Peltier?

Leonard Peltier is a Native American elder, artist, and activist who has spent nearly 50 years in federal prison. He is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and has long been a symbol of survival, strength, and resistance for Indigenous people around the world.

Leonard was incarcerated in the 1970s during a time of intense conflict between the U.S. government and Native American activists. Over the decades, many people—including human rights organizations, faith leaders, legal experts, and tribal nations—have raised serious concerns about the fairness of his trial and conviction.

While in prison, Leonard became known not only for his case, but for his spirit. He taught himself to paint, creating artwork that reflects Native culture, spirituality, and hope. His art has been shared around the world and has helped sustain him through decades of imprisonment.

Leonard is now an elder. After spending most of his adult life behind bars, he has been granted clemency and is preparing to live the remainder of his life outside of prison. This moment represents more than freedom for one man—it represents survival, endurance, and the ongoing struggle for justice for Indigenous peoples.

Leonard Peltier’s story is not just history. It is a living reminder of resilience, faith, and the power of community.
